There are two ways to approach leading.
(1) I’m leading an organization which contains humans.
(2) I’m leading humans who are part of an organization.
It matters which comes first.
Number one views humans as cogs and costs. It leads to seeing them as variables in a system to be optimized. It prioritizes efficiency in order to succeed.
Number two views humans as social beings who want to relate and make a difference. It leads to seeing them as complex individuals who want to feel inspired. It prioritizes meaning making in order to succeed.
Only number two is sustainable.
